With origins tracing back to the early 1930s, many often overlook that the B-24 was the most extensively produced aircraft by the US in World War II. In fact, the B-24J variant alone reached a production total of 6,678 aircraft. The Liberator weighed 36,500 pounds empty (71,200 pounds stocked), reached a top speed of 290 mph, and was armed with ten 12.7 mm machine-guns with a provision for nearly 18,000 pounds worth of bomb-load. ‘The Dragon and His Tail’ belonged to the 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group (le Shima).
