World Space Museum The Red Rover Lunokhod 1 on the Moon The first Soviet Union lunar rover, Lunokhod 1, landed on the Moon on November 17, 1970 - carried into space aboard the Luna 17 craft. Lunokhod 1 operated in the Sea of Rains (Mare Imbrium) for nearly one year taking photos and soil samples, and radioing the results back to Earth.
