Using the airframe of a Boeing 707-320B airliner and a massive payload of radar and electronic sensors, the E-3 AWACS is the flying headquaters for command, control, communications and intelligence. 71-1407 was the first of two EC-137D AWACS prototypes. Both were upgraded to E-3A operational standard as part of the 34 aircraft procured by the USAF. The first production E-3A flew on October 31, 1975, and delivery was made in March 1977 to the 552nd AC&CW at Tinker AFB, OK.
