About this plane: This Stuka is painted to represent an aircraft flown by the famous Luftwaffe Tank-busting ace Hans Ulrich Rudel. This Ju-87B-2 was attached to the Stabstaffel flight of III Gruppe/Stuka Gruppe 2 (Immelmann Squadron) based on the Russian Front in 1943. Rudel went on to fly the later model Ju-87G that was fitted with two 37mm cannon fitted in pods carried under the wing. Rudel destroyed nearly 2,000 vehicles on the ground by the time the war came to an end. Of that number, 519 were tanks. Most of these victories were scored on the Eastern Front. Rudel was the most decorated serviceman in the German Armed forces during WWII. He was also greatly feared and hated by the Russians. Stalin himself put a 100,000 ruble bounty on his life, a somber testament to his skills as a ground attack pilot. Rudel survived the war. |
